Square Dance Caller announce UK tour alongside new single ‘London Underground’
After brother and multi-instrumentalists Brendan and Michael Etherington formed Square Dance Caller in 2021, the Melbourne-based project has gained impressive traction in the industry, which started with additions Mat Hooler on keys and James Manning on bass. The band have since been lauded by tastemakers and blogs, as well as seeing spots on college radio and playlists. Now the band look ahead to their first UK tour this Autumn.
‘London Underground’, the latest single from Square Dance Caller, showcases a sound that is equally ethereal and gritty,. Driving guitar riffs and intimate, complex drum grooves, alongside a heavily distorted bass, paint the picture of a repetitive human existence, watching people pass by, each living an entirely different life to yours. The lyrics continue into this theme, with a vocal performance that takes on this mystical but deeply human phenomenon in tone. This is partly in thanks to a chorus full of spacious reverb and idyllic instrumentation.
Speaking about the single, the band share, “The inspiration for the song came from people-watching on a trip to the UK. The Underground is such an intricate labyrinth used by millions of people everyday and they all use it for different reasons... it seemed like a good idea for a song.”
