Back with their second release of the year, ‘Freer Than I Could Be’, sees alt-music power duo Sungaze return to the limelight with their sensational brand of evocative rock music. The band is the brain-child of American musicians Ian Hilvert and Ivory Snow as they set out to make a name for themselves, drawing on the influence of heavy grunge, gritty soundscapes and dream pop anthems.
Their new offering is a track of two halves, the first combining airy melodies with a nostalgic tint of childhood summers and the invincibility of youth. The second sees the roaring guitars create a poignant wall of sound, encapsulating the band’s sensational ability to draw on the peaks and troughs of what it means to be human. The emotion that's enthused within the record is second to none, each chord and lyric is just as charged as the next and brings a refreshing tint to the duo’s creative force.
Speaking about the release, Ivory Snow elaborates: “The initial inspiration for this song was remembering those hot, sticky, lazy summer days from childhood that seemed to go on forever. Back when the biggest worry was whether or not you had to take a bath that night, and the concept of death was foreign; something that had no place in your world. The first half of the song explores that feeling of invincibility, while the second half takes a look at the aftermath of that bubble of safety being burst and reckoning with the uncomfortable reality that comes with it.”
