Sungaze’s latest single ‘Lost My Head’, is perfectly atmospheric, the sprinkles of alternative angst completely absorbed by their shoegaze instrumental direction. Even on first listen, the single feels like a song you heard once before, over a decade ago. One that you’ve been trying to find ever since. Sonically, these pangs of melancholic nostalgia are unyielding, unauthorised to affect your emotions but bring a brutal wave of wistfulness.
Ian Hilvert, one-half of the creative duo behind Sungaze, explains the feelings that went into crafting this sound, sharing, “This song explores my habits of daydreaming, dissociation and anger. The title ‘Lost My Head’ is very fitting because it’s how I would describe the repercussions of all 3 of these experiences. The rest of the lyrics came to me from doing my best to be self-aware of my tendencies, and the chords and sounds were chosen to capture the mental struggles that came from the awareness.”
These internal conflicts are echoed throughout the track, the future a blurred and unobtainable treasure, but one that keeps you swimming towards the surface. Ivory Snow explains her influence, “When I was writing the bridge, my intention was to expand upon the themes Ian had already set in motion, and also to add in a little subtle advice. Both of us tend to experience “feeling permanence”: where it can be easy to have a good day and assume that’s just how it’s going to be forever. That way of thinking can get you into trouble when it’s a bad day, though. We are always reminding each other that feelings are transient and nothing lasts forever, good or bad.”
‘Lost My Head’ is released hot on the heels of the equally beautiful ‘Freer Than I Could Be’, both leading the writing duo toward their new self-titled album. While Hilvert and Snow are the creative force behind the project, the live renditions of their dream-like fallout are performed alongside Ivory’s sister Angela on bass and backing vocals, Zach on rhythm, Justin on drums and Charlie on keys.
