Tiyto has returned, bringing with them fresh inspirations in the kaleidoscopic atmospheres of new single ‘Reside’. Filled with endless colour in the instrumentation and vocals, the track’s natural sound is combined with clean production and crisp drums for an easy-going glow that immediately surrounds the listener. As electronic elements and effect-drenched guitars pour waterfalls over lush harmonic greenery, the vocals soar through simple but effective melodies that feel familiar on the first listen. As the track progresses, the clearing opens, with instruments shining new light of celestial glitter before returning back to a gorgeously hazy final chorus.
Stuart, vocalist and keyboard player for the band, dives into the track, “Reside is our sixth release and there’s a general consensus in the band that it might be our favourite yet. I love to spend time sat at the piano, playing around with chords when I get the chance. Every so often something sticks, and it gives a base to start the song. On this occasion, the chords and piano line used in the intro and chorus came about.
I came back to the idea a few months later and recorded the idea as a demo (after I eventually worked out how to play the line again). This time I really wanted us to create a song which was more up-tempo, with the live performance in mind. We tend to rotate between writing a slower darker track, and then a more upbeat, faster track. I had recently been inspired by a few hip-hop beats where the bass line and kick were in unison and wanted to replicate that punch in the beat.
The lyrics are something I always work on last, and I first record all demos with just whatever random words and flows seem to work best. The “let’s talk about” and the elongated “why” lyrics were part of these initial demo version. When trying to think of something to replace them, nothing really seemed to fit as well. Repetition is never a bad thing in the chorus anyway, I guess? With the lyrics in the verses, I wanted to use plenty of metaphors about a person chasing and fighting so hard for something that was inevitably over. When making the beat for the demo, I really didn’t think of poor Rob’s calves, but he built out the beat and really made it work for the track.
Max usually takes the demo and looks to add guitars as layers. We also tend to look at whether some demo parts we want to keep work better as synth or guitar parts. He ended up using an eBow for one of the repeating guitar parts in the chorus. This seemed like a great idea at the time but it's turned out to be a nightmare for live shows.
Tiyto is a three-piece band formed by Stuart, who takes the lead on songwriting and brings in the talents of Robert Waters on drums and Max McKinstry-Hart on guitars and bass to bring his music to life. Since their debut in 2022, Tiyto’s sparse releases have seen the band slowly distil their sound to where it is today, having a unique indie radiance. ‘Reside’ was recorded by Sam Winfield at Studio 91, and opens the door for their first outing of 2024.
